China on Monday moved to implement new sanctions agreed last week against North Korea, announcing a ban on imports of coal, iron ore and seafood.
The boycott, of the of North Korea’s most lucrative exports, is intended to ratchet up economic pressure on Pyongyang’s weapons programmes. Beijing’s Ministry of Commerce made the announcement of the ban on its website Monday, saying the ban would go into effect Tuesday.
The move had been agreed in last week’s United Nations resolution, signed by China, to strengthen the stranglehold on key North Korean exports.
