Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong jailed over Occupy protests

Joshua Wong and two other Hong Kong democracy activists have been jailed for their part in the Occupy protests of 2014 as the authorities intensify their crackdown on dissent in the semi-autonomous territory.

Mr Wong, 20, Nathan Law, 24, a former legislator, and Alex Chow, 26, were sentenced to between six and eight months at the city’s High Court on Thursday after the Hong Kong government won its appeal against non-custodial sentences.

The three men were convicted of illegal assembly in 2016 for storming a square in front of the main government offices. The action precipitated the Occupy movement, which brought large parts of Hong Kong to a standstill for 79 days as demonstrators demanded that Beijing give the city democratic elections.
