China agrees to further UN moves to curb North Korea nuclear tests

China said it is considering additional UN measures to rein in North Korea’s fast advancing nuclear programme, but stopped short of endorsing a draft US proposal to ban oil imports.

“Given the new developments on the Kor¬ean peninsula, China agrees that the UN Security Council should make a further response and take necessary measures,” Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said yesterday, without elaborating.

The US is calling for new UN sanctions against North Korea, including a ban on oil imports, textile exports and the em¬ployment of North Koreans overseas in the wake of its sixth, largest nuclear test at the weekend.
