Mexico expels North Korean ambassador after missile tests

Mexico – which has built a foreign policy doctrine on diplomatic non-interference in other nations’ affairs – has expelled North Korea’s ambassador in protest at its nuclear tests, which Mexico said were “flagrant violations” of international law and UN Security Council resolutions.

“The Mexican government has today declared the Ambassador of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Mr Kim Hyong Gil, persona non grata and has given him 72 hours to leave the country,” the foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

“With this diplomatic action, Mexico expresses to the government of North Korea its absolute rejection of its recent nuclear activity, which represents a frank and growing violation of international law and a grave threat to the Asian region and the world,” it said. North Korea’s most recent nuclear test – its sixth and most powerful – endangered “fundamental allies” of Mexico including Japan and South Korea.
