WSJ reporter sentenced to prison by Turkish court

A Turkish court has convicted a Wall Street Journal reporter of engaging in terrorist propaganda and sentenced her to two years and one month in prison.

The conviction of Ayla Albayrak, who is now in the US, comes amid a crackdown on journalists by the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ms Albayrak and the newspaper plan to appeal the decision in the case, which stemmed from a 2015 article she wrote about a conflict between Turkish security forces and Kurdish separatists in southeastern Turkey. Following the article’s publication she was told she was being investigated for spreading terrorist propaganda and was later indicted for violating Turkish antiterror law.
