China expands power of anti-corruption watchdog

China’s anti-corruption watchdog is set to gain even greater powers as part of a Communist party attempt to cement its control over broader swaths of the state. 

The disciplinary watchdog will be transformed into a superagency, overseeing all inspections of government departments and state-owned firms and institutions as well as within the ruling party, officials said on Thursday.  

The watchdog’s powers have already greatly increased under President Xi Jinping, who is kicking off a second term at the party’s showpiece Congress this week and has used the anti-corruption drive to tighten his grip.
