China bike-sharing apps find UK market tough to crack

Aarav, a 17-year-old student, this year ditched his after-school job as a food delivery courier to transport and repair bikes instead.

He says his work with Ofo, the Chinese bike-sharing app, pays more than the takeaway service, Deliveroo.

For £9.45 an hour, he wheels bikes that have been abandoned by Ofo’s users to designated hubs. The work, which also involves carrying out small repairs, highlights the significant logistical challenge for dockless bike start-ups that have sprung up in the UK.
