Olympics thaw with North Korea stirs public anger in South

South Korea’s government is facing a public backlash over its efforts to bring North Korea to next month’s Winter Olympic Games, with both younger and older generations aggrieved at Pyongyang’s participation.

The reaction threatens to undermine Seoul’s peace overtures to its northern neighbour and risks damaging the standing of South Korean leader Moon Jae-in, who has focused his presidency on an attentiveness to public opinion.

Divided for more than 70 years, the two Koreas last week agreed to compete at the Olympic Games next month under a “unification flag” as well as field a joint women’s ice-hockey team.
