S Korea seeks to reinstate levies in response to new US tariffs

South Korea has responded quickly and forcefully to a US decision to slap tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels, with officials in the east Asian nation seeking to reinstate levies on imported American products.

The comments from Kim Hyun-jong, South Korea's trade minister, came as Seoul said it would complain to the World Trade Organisation, calling the move by the Trump administration "excessive" and "regrettable".

"It is clear that the latest safeguard measures would violate the WTO rules. We will actively respond to protectionist measures," said Mr Kim.
