US imposes new North Korea sanctions over Kim Jong Nam assassination

The US government has imposed new sanctions on North Korea for its use of chemical weapons in the assassination of Kim Jong Nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The State Department did not detail what the sanctions would cover but said they were “in addition to existing U.S. comprehensive sanctions against targeting unlawful North Korean activities”.

The sanctions, which took effect on March 5, followed a determination by the US in February that the government of North Korea used VX, a chemical warfare agent, to assassinate Kim Jong Nam in February 2017.
