Delivery robots hit the streets, but some cities opt out

Automated delivery robots may not have taken to the skies in large numbers, despite Amazon’s trial in 2016, but they have hit the streets and are delivering items — from laundry to burgers — to consumers’ doorsteps.

Ahti Heinla, co-founder of Starship Technologies, a European maker of delivery robots designed to trundle the pavements of towns and cities, believes the technology will grow exponentially within a few years.

The company, whose founders were among the team that started Skype, maintains its development operations in Estonia. It also has offices in the UK, Germany and the US and claims its robots have been tested in 100 cities and have passed by 12m people.
