Nicolas Sarkozy, former president of France, was taken into police custody yesterday in connection with a probe into alleged financing of his 2007 presidential campaign by the late Libyan dictator Muammer Gaddafi.
It was the first time Mr Sarkozy was summoned for questioning by judges over their inquiry into allegations that Mr Gaddafi donated €50m in illicit funds to his successful campaign. He could be held for up to 48 hours.
The case has been building since Ziad Takieddine, a middleman in the alleged transaction, claimed he had carried €5m in Libyan cash to Paris in late 2006, when he handed it over to Mr Sarkozy’s then chief of staff, Claude Guéant.
