India to re-equip air force with over 100 new fighters

India has said it wants to buy around 110 new fighter jets, in what could be one of the biggest military aviation deals ever signed.

New Delhi has asked defence companies to provide information about the jets they make as it takes the next steps to replacing ageing squadrons. 

In a statement on its website, India’s defence ministry announced it wanted three-quarters of the new fleet to be single-seat aircraft and the rest to be twin-seaters — specifications that are likely to attract bids from some of the world’s biggest weapons makers. It added that it wanted 15 per cent of the aircraft to be ready to fly immediately, but the rest to be built in India.
