China and India use summit to push for improved ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to maintain “peace and tranquillity” along their disputed border and enhance “strategic communication” during a two-day summit intended to improve tense relations between the giant Asian neighbours.

The two leaders also agreed to “handle all our differences through peaceful discussions”, Vijay Gokhale, India’s foreign secretary, told reporters in the Chinese city of Wuhan on Saturday. 

He said the leaders would also give “strategic guidance” to their respective militaries to avoid further friction.
