Taiwan opposition ditches pro-China overtures ahead of poll

Taiwan’s opposition has ditched its overtly pro-China platform ahead of upcoming local elections, suggesting that Beijing’s attempts to both woo and bully Taipei into unification are floundering.

The Kuomintang, or Chinese Nationalist party, has ruled out formal moves towards unification with China, instead reverting to a moderate approach to draw support from voters who are wary of Beijing.

The party is at one of the lowest ebbs in its history after losing the presidency and its parliamentary majority in 2016 to the Democratic Progressive party led by President Tsai Ing-wen.
