Australia considers Huawei 5G ban over security concerns

Huawei has appealed to Canberra not to block it from supplying equipment for Australia’s next-generation mobile services amid concerns by US intelligence officials and local politicians that it posed a security risk. 

John Lord, chairman of Huawei’s Australia unit, warned on Monday that banning the Chinese-owned company from tenders to supply 5G mobile broadband equipment would have “huge significance” for its local business and competition in the market.

He also rejected claims made by a Labor party politician that Huawei was controlled by Beijing, saying it was a private company owned by its staff.
