Buffett and Bezos pick surgeon to lead vehicle tackling workers’ health costs

Amazon, JPMorgan Chase and Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway have named Atul Gawande, a prominent surgeon and writer, as chief executive of their joint venture to tackle US employee healthcare.

Dr Gawande will take the reins of the new Boston-based company in July. It will use technology and “the scale and complementary expertise” of its three backers to reduce healthcare costs for their nearly 1m employees.

The company will be operated as a separate entity “free from profitmaking incentives and constraints”, the companies said.
