President Donald Trump signed an order that halts his own policy of separating children from their parents at the US-Mexico border, in an effort to quell the furore that has erupted from both ends of the political spectrum.
“I didn’t like the sight …of families being separated,” Mr Trump said as he signed the order in the Oval Office.
The move came as a chorus of outrage at the policy grew to include House speaker Paul Ryan, Pope Francis, and the chief executive of Goldman Sachs.
