A US Senate committee on Tuesday backed the finding that Russia attempted to help Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, supporting the US intelligence community’s verdict on the 2016 election.
The Senate Intelligence Committee said in a summary of its initial findings that Russia interfered in the election on the orders of Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, with a clear preference for Mr Trump over his opponent, Hillary Clinton.
The joint findings by Republicans and Democratic lawmakers in the Senate contrasts with the acrimony on the House Intelligence Committee, which ended its investigation into Russia’s alleged election interference in March.
