US eases some restrictions on ZTE until August 1

The US Commerce Department said on Tuesday that it will allow ZTE to temporarily engage in certain business activities as the Chinese telecom aims to escape a seven-year export ban slapped on it by US authorities in April.

The order, dated July 2, will allow ZTE to engage in some transactions to support and maintain equipment and networks, provide service and support for existing ZTE phones, receive disclosures about cyber security and vulnerabilities and make or receive payments. The limited authorisation runs from July 2 until August 1.

The ZTE ban came in response to what the Trump administration described as violations of US sanctions on Iran and North Korea and the terms of a subsequent plea agreement.
