China pursues alliance with EU in trade tussle with US

China is turning to the EU to form a united front against Donald Trump’s trade policies, offering preferential treatment and speeding up investment talks amid a deteriorating international trade environment.

Beijing wants to overcome EU wariness and build a coalition against Washington at a summit in the Chinese capital with European leaders on July 16-17. Donald Tusk, the European Council president, and Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Commission president, are leading the delegation.

Li Keqiang, the Chinese premier, is due to meet Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, in Berlin before returning to Beijing to host the EU delegation.
