Pakistan polls close in election marred by violence

Polls have closed in Pakistan following an election day marked by violence and accusations of fraud, but which should lead to a new government being installed in Islamabad in the coming days.

Voters across the nation of 105m people lined up to cast their ballots on Wednesday in a general election that has seen Imran Khan, the former international cricketer, and Shehbaz Sharif, brother of the jailed former prime minister, emerge as favourites.

Analysts say Mr Khan faces his best chance  of achieving power since entering politics 22 years ago, following the imprisonment  of Nawaz Sharif, who was prime minister until being ousted last year on charges of corruption.
