Space scientists have detected the first large body of liquid water on Mars, a 20km-wide subglacial lake beneath the red planet’s ice cap that they say provides a potential habitat for life.
The Italian Space Agency, which announced the news at a press conference in Rome on Wednesday, said the landmark discovery 1.5km below the planet’s surface had been made using its ground-penetrating radar technology called Marsis, which is currently onboard the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter.
The existence of the Martian lake will further encourage astrobiologists’ hopes that life can be found buried deep below the planet’s surface.
