Emmerson Mnangagwa declared winner in Zimbabwe election

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been declared the winner of the southern African country’s first elections without Robert Mugabe, against a backdrop of military violence and opposition claims of vote-rigging.

Mr Mnangagwa, a former spy chief who was installed as president by a coup that overthrew Mr Mugabe last year, won with just under 51 per cent of the vote. He polled 2.46m votes, to 2.14m for his main rival Nelson Chamisa.

Zanu-PF also swept to its biggest parliamentary majority in many years after Monday’s vote. The party secured two-thirds of seats needed to alter Zimbabwe’s constitution.
