El Salvador has severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan in favour of China, in the latest sign Beijing is working to erode Taiwan’s diplomatic space.
The move, which takes the number of countries with formal ties with Taiwan to 17 and marks the third country to switch allegiance from Taiwan to China since May, comes amid a broader ratcheting up of pressure on Taiwan by China.
El Salvador had “recognised there is only one China in the world”, China’s foreign minister Wang Yi said.
