Microsoft has uncovered six internet domains used by Kremlin-linked hackers that targeted Republican-leaning US groups, in a sign that Russian efforts to influence US politics are growing ahead of November’s midterm elections .
The revelation triggered alarm on Capitol Hill yesterday, and prompted new calls for the Trump administration to step up its efforts to counter Russian activities ahead of the elections.
The US technology company said a group known as APT 28, also dubbed Fancy Bear or Strontium and linked to Russian military intelligence, created fake websites that mimicked web addresses of the US Senate and two conservative non-profit organisations, the International Republican Institute and the Hudson Institute.
