US sanctions against Turkey risk fuelling terrorism and exacerbating the refugee crisis, the country’s finance minister claimed on Monday in a stark warning to Donald Trump.
Speaking during a visit to Paris, Berat Albayrak said punitive measures by the US aimed at forcing the release of a detained American pastor could have negative repercussions that would undermine global safety and security.
He said that measures taken against Turkey had the potential to create “large and unforeseeable problems” adding: “With the damage [these steps] will cause to regional stability, they will also unfortunately contribute to chaotic problems that feed terrorism and also the refugee crisis.”
