The EU would be willing to remove all tariffs on cars in a trade deal with the US, the bloc’s top trade official said on Thursday, underlining the bloc’s readiness to expand the scope of trade talks agreed with Washington.
Cecilia Malmstrom, the EU trade commissioner, said Brussels would negotiate a zero tariff deal on cars if the US reciprocated, something she cautioned “remains to be seen”.
Cars were left out of a plan agreed in July by US president Donald Trump and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, who said they would explore a possible trade deal for “zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, and zero subsidies” on industrial goods.
