South Korea scrambles to salvage diplomacy on peninsula

South Korea’s role as a mediator between North Korea and the US has again been cast in the spotlight as Seoul scrambles to salvage denuclearisation talks on the Korean peninsula.

The South Korean presidential Blue House announced it would this week send five top officials to Pyongyang, including the country’s national security adviser Chung Eui-yong who spearheaded a breakthrough in relations earlier this year.

The move comes amid growing concerns that the momentum — and the goodwill — propelling ties between Pyongyang and Washington since their landmark summit in June is dissipating.
