Shinzo Abe is on track to become Japan’s longest-serving prime minister after defeating a leadership challenger for the ruling Liberal Democratic party.
Mr Abe won 553 out of a possible 810 votes in the leadership ballot, comfortably beating rival Shigeru Ishiba.
The victory gives him another three-year term as leader of the LDP. With lower house elections not due until 2021, Mr Abe can hope to stay as prime minister until the Tokyo Olympics of 2020 and beyond.
