Taiwan’s youth shun government ahead of local polls

Activists in Taiwan are planning a series of mass protest rallies in the coming weeks, as opposition towards President Tsai Ing-wen builds over fears that her government will back down from plans to legalise same-sex marriage.

The mood among activists is a marked change from the euphoria that swept through Taiwan’s youthful civil society in May last year after a top court ruled that banning same-sex unions was unconstitutional.

That decision paved the way for the government in Taipei to become the first in Asia to permit gay marriage and reignited optimism over Ms Tsai’s administration.
