Chinese scientist defends controversial gene-editing experiment

Chinese scientist He Jiankui defended himself in his first public appearance since sparking a global backlash following claims that he had created the world’s first genetically edited babies.

Mr He earlier this week announced the potentially pioneering work on a pair of twin girls, known as Lulu and Nana, earlier this week.

The girls’ father is HIV positive and the gene editing was undertaken to remove the CCR5 gene that allows HIV to infect cells. Mr He said he had used Crispr technology, which uses strands of DNA to disable or change faulty genes.
