Putin suggests new countries could join nuclear missile treaty

Russian president Vladimir Putin has suggested Moscow could open negotiations with other countries to join the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty, a US-Russia arms agreement that Washington has threatened to abandon.

The US this month gave Russia a two-month deadline to comply with the 1987 agreement that bans missiles with a range of 500-5,500km. Russia has denied that it is in breach and has condemned the threat to withdraw.

At the same time, Mr Putin on Tuesday warned that Russia could quite simply adapt its existing sea and air-launched missiles if the US did withdraw from the treaty. The agreement only covers land-fired missiles.
