Canada says third citizen detained by Chinese authorities

Chinese authorities have detained a third Canadian citizen, officials in Canada said, prompting concerns that Beijing was continuing to ramp up diplomatic pressure on Ottawa following the arrest of Huawei’s chief financial officer in Vancouver earlier this month.

Two Canadians — former diplomat Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, a prominent expert on North Korea — were detained in China following the arrest on December 1 of Meng Wanzhou, CFO of the Chinese telecoms group and the daughter of Huawei’s founder.
