The trial of 11 Saudis accused of killing the journalist Jamal Khashoggi opened in Riyadh yesterday, and prosecutors called for the death penalty for five of the suspects.
The accused and their lawyers requested more time to respond to the charges over the death of Khashoggi, a prominent columnist, allegedly at the hands of Saudi agents in the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul last October.
The trial is central to the kingdom’s effort to quell an international outcry over a crime that has badly damaged the reputation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as he tries to push an economic and social reform programme.
