Carmakers face cuts and gloom as China sales shift into reverse

The Chery Jaguar Land Rover factory in eastern China can churn out more than 10,000 vehicles a month. But of late the plant has been eerily quiet as it runs at half its capacity.

“I attend professional training classes, revising topics I’ve already studied,” said the 25-year-old head of a 14-person assembly team, which has downed tools, at the plant.

After almost three decades of world-beating growth, annual passenger vehicle sales in China, the world’s largest car market, have reversed for the first time since 1990, shrinking 4 per cent last year to 23.8m.
