The Trump administration has suspended US participation in a signature cold war-era arms control treaty after accusing Russia of deploying midrange missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons, which are prohibited by the pact.
Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, accused the Kremlin of violating the 1987 Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty “without remorse”, and said the US would withdraw from the agreement entirely in six months unless Russia used the final window to address its concerns.
But the decision was seen to be more about rising tensions with China, with many in the US foreign policy establishment arguing Washington was being constrained as Beijing expanded its nuclear missile arsenal.
