Chinese prosecutors take custody of ex-Interpol president

China’s Communist Party has handed the former president of Interpol over to police prosecutors for alleged corruption and stripped him of his government title, state media reported on Wednesday.

Meng Hongwei, who had been responsible for China’s domestic policing as vice-minister of public security, had been found guilty of “severe disciplinary problems”, including abuse of power and taking bribes, they reported.

The Party’s disciplinary committee has been especially active under President Xi Jinping, who has used it to purge allegedly corrupt officials as well as tighten his grip on power. The watchdog announced the investigation into Mr Meng last October. Such investigations usually result in a guilty finding.
