Foxconn chairman Terry Gou launches bid for Taiwan presidency

Taiwanese tycoon Terry Gou announced on Wednesday that he will contest next January’s presidential election, a bid that disrupts the race amid rising tension with China.

Mr Gou, founder and chairman of Apple supplier Foxconn, said he would run in the primaries of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT).

The Foxconn founder’s push into politics comes as China has ramped up military threats and an international isolation campaign against Taiwan. Beijing claims the island as its territory and refuses to renounce the use of military force against it. It wants to force incumbent president Tsai Ing-wen to agree to its view that Taiwan is part of China, a view Ms Tsai rejects.
