Republicans began to break ranks with Donald Trump over attacks by the president on “radical left congresswomen”, after he called on the US lawmakers to “go back” from where “they came”.
Rather than apologise for the weekend remarks, which appeared to target four outspoken Democratic women of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, Mr Trump doubled down on the statements on Monday.
“If you’re not happy here you can leave,” he said at a press briefing on Monday. “These are people who in my opinion hate our country.” It did not concern him that many saw the tweets as racist, he added, “because many people agree with me”.
