Brands walk tightrope between Hong Kong protests and Beijing

Hong Kong’s mass protests are creating a dilemma for companies as they try to avoid offending supporters of the demonstrations while not running afoul of Beijing.

Sun Hung Kai Properties, the city’s largest developer by market capitalisation, was forced to respond on Monday after it attracted fierce criticism both on social media and in person from supporters of the demonstrations against the territory’s chief executive and a contentious extradition bill.

The supporters accused SHKP management of asking police to pursue demonstrators into its Shatin shopping mall on Sunday, a situation that led to violent clashes resulting in injuries to both protesters and police.
