President Donald Trump said the US navy has shot down an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz after it threatened an American warship, adding to tensions in one of the world’s most important oil shipping lanes.
“This is the latest of many provocative and hostile actions by Iran against vessels operating in international waters,” said Mr Trump, adding the drone was “immediately destroyed”.
“The United States reserves the right to defend our personnel, facilities, and interests,” he said.
