UK plans ‘fast-track’ visas after Brexit to boost science

Boris Johnson has moved to ease concerns over the future of the UK’s science industry after Britain leaves the EU by announcing plans for a “fast-track visa route”, which may include abolishing the cap on the number of visas for the most high-skilled workers.

Announcing a consultation on Thursday, the prime minister said the government would work closely with the UK’s scientific community to develop a system that would encourage “the brightest and best” talent. The new scheme is due to be launched later this year.

“I want the UK to continue to be a global science superpower, and when we leave the EU we will support science and research and ensure that, far from losing out, the scientific community has a huge opportunity to develop and export our innovation around the world,” he said.
