India reforms see electric carmakers stall

India’s electric vehicle makers have warned of the “brutal” short-term effects of reforms that were designed to boost the sector and encourage local production.

With the world’s worst air pollution and a high dependence on imported oil, India’s government has made switching to EVs a priority. Authorities have set a series of ambitious targets, such as proposing that all vehicle sales be electric by 2030.

Electric cars currently account for less than 0.1 per cent of the market, according to the government, while electric scooter and motorcycle sales are similarly muted.
