President Donald Trump said he had not yet agreed to remove tariffs on Chinese goods as part of the first phase of a deal aimed at ending the 20-month US-China trade war.
US and Chinese officials had indicated on Thursday that both sides had reached a deal to reduce some tariffs to secure a “phase one” deal. But Mr Trump cautioned on Friday that he not yet approved the deal that is being hammered out by his trade negotiators.
“I haven’t agreed to anything,” Mr Trump said. “China would like to get somewhat of a rollback, [but] not a complete rollback because they know I won’t do it.”
