Mark Esper, the US defence secretary, said the Pentagon was willing to alter its military exercises on the Korean peninsula to help convince North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to abandon his nuclear weapons.
Speaking to reporters as he flew to South Korea, Mr Esper said the US would “adjust our exercise posture either more or less depending on what diplomacy may require”.
“We have to open to all those things and empower and enable our diplomats to sit down with the North Koreans,” he added.
