A Pakistani court on Tuesday sentenced the country’s former dictator General Pervez Musharraf to death for treason in an unprecedented verdict against a onetime military ruler of the country.
The landmark case against Gen Musharraf, who has been living abroad since 2016 when he left Pakistan to seek medical treatment, represented the first time a former president of the country has faced the death sentence.
“This [verdict] indicates the path we are going to take in future. This is a defining moment in our history,” Ashtar Ausaf Ali, former Pakistan attorney-general, told the Financial Times.
