US stocks traded serenely through a holiday-shortened Christmas Eve session, in contrast to the turmoil one year ago, holding on to gains that have made this the best year for equities since 2013.
The technology-focused Nasdaq market finished the day 0.1 per cent higher, setting a new record and capping 10 straight days of gains, matching its best run since the summer of 2017.
The S&P 500 index closed the day flat after an initial gain of 0.1 per cent, meaning the benchmark has returned 28.6 per cent so far this year — not far from the 29.6 per cent annual gain of 2013 and the 31 per cent of 1997. Risers were led by blue-chips including chipmaker AMD, which was boosted by a broker upgrade.
