Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak dies aged 91

Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president ousted by a popular revolt in 2011, has died at the age of 91.

Mubarak, an autocrat who ruled for 30 years, allowed no democratic development in the country during his presidency and was widely believed to have been grooming Gamal, his younger son, to succeed him when protests erupted against his rule in January 2011.

Hundreds of people were killed by police in the early days of the 2011 revolution, as Mubarak battled to retain his grip on power in the face of a massive popular uprising. But he was eventually forced to resign on February 11 by the army as it sought to quell the unrest and manage a transition.
