Johnson tells Britons to avoid pubs, office and travel

Boris Johnson issued a new wave of stringent measures to tackle the coronavirus epidemic in the UK on Monday, warning the British public they would have to reduce social contact and recommending self-isolation for those most at risk for four months.

Matt Hancock, the health secretary, confirmed later that the number of coronavirus deaths in the UK had surged to 53, up from 35 on Sunday.
